CONVENTIONAL SOLUTIONS ARE LACKING
Radars often have trouble differentiating between small drones and other flying objects, while optic solutions generate false alarms. The issue with many acoustic solutions is that drones are becoming increasingly quiet.
Jamming-based solutions, or hybrid solutions featuring jammers for mitigation, emit large amounts of energy to block drones’ controller signals and render them largely unable to function properly. This is not the optimal solution for federal security organizations, for multiple reasons. Jamming may block communications, which could obviously hamper communication between federal teams and units.
Many authorized security bodies utilize authorized drones for various purposes, including monitoring and surveillance, but jamming based solutions are unable to distinguish between “friend and foe.”
Kinetic counter-drone solutions, which involve shooting down the sUAS, are also too risky in crowded situations. What goes up must come down, and the falling drone, the projectile itself or the metal debris that is created from shooting a drone could injure law enforcement personnel, or people in the affected area.
